Take-Out:
Sharing the Extreme Dream on Oregon's Secret, N. Umpqua
It was a last minute decision to shift north as our original plan was
to run the Illinois, or do a 4-day expedition on the Rogue. It was
cold and rainy, so we desired to take advantage of car access and
a new run on the N. Umpqua River.
Oar boats were the decision as we set up 2 14 ft. self-bailers at put-in
and found out information on the river.
We camped out so we could select and cut a Christmas tree with our permit.
We'll also remember next year to bring shovel and axe as its possible
to bring a few saplings home too.
Going to some beautiful falls afterward.
We headed out toward Crater Lake with one boat still inflated, hoping perhaps
to take a raft out to Wizard Island. But we found the roads a bit treacherous
with icy conditions from a couple of feet of new snow. We decided only
to take some photos on the rim of the lake in the snow, but the rangers
thought we we're going to do something otherwise. They said, "Today is NOT
a good day to die..." They were relieved when they saw us roll up the boat
after our photo shoot. The snow we threw around was a bit sticky and refroze
as we tried to roll up the boat. Clear and cold, it hurt our hands, but we
got everything in the vehicles and headed home.
